INTRODUCTION:
The Latin name “neglecta” is appropriate for these butterflies. For more than one hundred years, Summer Azure were overlooked as a species—considered only a seasonal form of Spring Azure. Not until 1995 were look-alike Spring and Summer Azure recognized as different entities. Summer Azure are multi-brooded.
What is the Azure butterfly?
The spring azure is a true harbinger of spring. It is our earliest native butterfly to emerge from overwintering pupae, and it often flies before the wild plum buds have opened. Spring azures can be found in a variety of habitats from brushy fields and other open areas to wooded habitats, roadsides, and gardens.
Where do azure butterflies live?
Resident throughout much of central and eastern North America (Scott 1986). Habitats are wooded areas. Host plants can be herbs, vines, shrubs or trees, with known hosts in many families.
What does summer azure eat?
The summer azure lives statewide in all habitats. The larvae eat a variety of host plants. The adults feed on flower nectar.
CONCLUSION:
Look for this butterfly near streams, and on the edges of wooded areas. It uses elderberry, madrona, and ocean spray as larval host plants. This species produces two generations per year!
